Freshly squeezed breakfast

Recipe by Sara Bonjoch

Just before summer I bought a juicer to prepare freshly squeezed juices for breakfast. I am very happy with my new juicer so I can combine fruits and vegetables and experiment every morning.

Freshly squeezed juices

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Juicing time: 2 minutes

Apples, Carrots, and Celery or GingerCucumber, Pink Lady apple and 1 lemon, pear and melon or watermelon.Pink grapefruit and oranges

Pineapple, apple and strawberries.

Pineapple, cucumber and mint.

Other ingredients to combine with: kiwi, spinach, beetroot.

The juices I used to prepare regularly were pink grapefruit, orange and grapefruit or orange and lemon. I love bitter flavours and they fulfilled my vitamin C daily intake. It was a shot of energy and I think they’ve saved me from a few colds, or at least I believe so, if it is not one of those health myths I have been brought up to, that vitamin C is good for colds.

If plain grapefruit juice is too bitter, instead of adding sugar to it, the best option is to combine it with sweet fruits like apples (especially pink lady), strawberries or kiwis.

It is pretty obvious orange is my color, not only is the color of my bedroom wall, but also another of my favourite juices is carrot based. Any combination with carrot is great but especially it tastes delicious with apple and celery, or ginger for autumn and winter months.

When you buy a bunch of carrots, keeping them attached to the leaves makes them last longer and they have a stronger and more natural flavour.

Eating a pineapple for breakfast is great, and freshly squeezed pineapple juice combined with apple and strawberries is even better. Pineapple combined with cucumber and a bit of mint, it is less sweet and more refreshing.

If you empty the pineapple instead of peeling it and drink directly from the carcass with a straw in the morning, it adds holiday feel to your morning run.

If you don’t like juices with warm colors and prefer a greener combination, cucumber with pear, apple, or even melon and water melon, with a touch of lemon zest, it is delicious.

Kiwi, parsley or spinach also bring a green tone to the juices. And adding beetroot gives a purple colour for the bravest ones.

The best part of preparing juices is to be creative and experiment with any combination of fruit and vegetables. Some may be tastier than others but they will always be healthy, full of vitamins and bring color to your day.
